My Controversial Approach To Niching
Written by Shiv Shetti
😮
Have you ever been told to “find your copywriting niche and become #1”?

Yeah… I think that’s a load of rubbish.

Here’s why:

This advice unnecessarily adds months - sometimes YEARS - to your journey of achieving freelance copywriting nirvana.

In case you don’t know what I’m talking about…

…'freelance copywriting nirvana' is the process EVERY copywriter needs to go through to reach their definition of the ‘copywriting dream’.

(Go back and read my first article if you don't know what I'm taking about)

Look -

I’m guessing you don’t give a sh*t about being the best fitness coach copywriter.

Or the best SaaS copywriter.

Or the best health supplement ecommerce copywriter.

I mean - unless you LOVE one particular niche and your goal is to become the copywriting king/queen within that niche…

...what’s the point of trying to be #1?

And if you’re like me when I was in your position -

It’s something you actively don’t want!

I mean…

All you need for freelance copywriting nirvana is a couple of solid $3k-$5k/month retainers.

So who cares if they’re not in the exact same niche?

And don’t talk to me about ‘client security’ either.

Sure -

Being the #1 [insert niche] copywriter means biz owners in that niche (both good and bad…) will always be looking to work with you.

(Which = client/work security = financial security)

But I’d rather derive security in my copywriting business through a repeatable client-getting process.

One that I can use any day, any time, to great effect.

Take one of my students, Michael.

He’s got a $3k/month retainer with a 7-figure client in the ‘online marketing’ world.

And, he’s using the flaming camel to branch out to the relationship and ‘personal growth’ fields to mix things up and keep it interesting.

As a result -

He’s got a mini-celebrity marriage coach (who’s looking to star in their own TV show soon) AND a world-renowned hypnotherapist (who has coached high-performing CEOs like Russell Brunson) both keen to work with him.

^ That - to me at least - is 100 times more appealing than being shoe-horned into one niche for the rest of my career.

Plus, conflict of interest often means you can’t take a lot of the gigs that come your way.

(Imagine 5 close competitors all want to work with you… you can’t say yes to all of them!)

That’s another big danger of doggedly sticking to one niche.

The worst part?

Everyone is attached to this idea of ‘be the #1 expert!’.

Most client-getting courses teach it.

Most copywriting podcasts rave about it.

And most broke copywriters talk about how ‘crucial’ it is in the forums and Facebook groups.

But not me.

I view ‘niching’ PURELY as a means to focus.

I don’t buy into this whole ‘positioning’ + ‘authority content’ + ‘go-to copywriting expert’ crap.

Not saying it doesn’t work… because of course it does!

But it’s totally unnecessary for achieving your income and lifestyle goals.

Look -

The ENTIRE GOAL of the flaming camel is to get you to freelance copywriting nirvana as fast as possible.

Financial security through retainers.

Escape from inconsistent, small-fry copy gigs and the rat race (if you’re in it).

Time freedom after you get comfortable with the workload and start to write high-converting copy faster and faster.

Everything has been optimised for that objective.

One core process. One core goal. Pure focus.

If you want to stick to one niche, you can.

But there's 0 point in trying to be the 'go-to' expert.

So -

If you don’t care about being the #1 copywriter in a niche…

(Spending endless months pointlessly ‘making a name for yourself’)

...and instead, you’d rather take the ‘sniper’ approach to land retainers on demand with my proven outreach process...
